A long journey: Set of educational qualifications needed in becoming a Surgeon
Turning into a Surgeon, as said before, is not a cakewalk. A very long span of continued dedication is involved in the game. The road to becoming a Surgeon is very long and involves four long years of college followed by four long years of medical school and five years in a residency program.
High school
An aspiring Surgeon should get all set to become a Surgeon right from the high school level. Students who get good grades in the subjects like biology, physics, chemistry, anatomy and mathematics (which will be needed later in advanced stages of study). A person intending to be a Surgeon must have a high school diploma or GED to ensure admission to college. They should work hard at this level to clear SAT test, and to earn goodwill of the teachers so that likelihood to enter a good college intensifies.
Bachelor’s Degree
The next essential step is acquiring bachelor’s degree which is spread over a four year academic program. At this juncture, the students are expected to choose a science based major subject like biology or chemistry to undergo a detailed coursework in that subject, which also requires visits at clinics and hospitals. Nearing the end of this course, a student must apply to a medical school, the admission to which is dependent on his MCAT scores, academic record, medical experience and commendation of teachers.
Training at the medical school
In the medical school, a student studies specialized medicinal subjects like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, psychology, pathology, immunology, microbiology, internal medicine, obstetrics and medical moral principles. During this course spanning four years the students undergo extensive theoretical training in the first two years and thorough practical internship in the subsequent two years.
License making
In the U.S., it is compulsory for all the surgery students to have a license to practice. This license could be managed only after passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Other than this all Surgeons must also pass the eight hours General Surgery Qualifying Exam (QE). This is a prerequisite for the next step i.e. residency.
Residency
After the acquisition of license, a Surgeon enters a five year residency program. During this term of residency, the Surgeons may choose their particular field of interest in surgery and can learn important things under the guidance of experts in dealing with actual patients.
